I have the privilege of working with children every day. I work with what society calls "rich children," middle class children," and "poor children." Through the years, I've learned to see them all the same. Each one has individual qualities that make them special. I love my job!
One day while working, I called a little boy down to the center. Someone had provided a new pair of tennis shoes for him. As he burst through the door, he had crooked glasses, dirty fingernails, and his hair looked as if he had just crawled out of bed. He didn't know why I called him down, but when I pulled the new shoes out of the box, he was trying to put his foot in them before I could get them set on the floor. I didn't even have to ask him if he liked them. His sparkling eyes and the smile on his face said it all. He was so excited. I fought back tears that day as I gave him some new socks and tied up his shoes for him.
It made me stop and think of all that God has given me. I am able to provide good things for my children. When I went home, I shared my day with my children. I told them that they should appreciate the things that God has given them.
The next day as the little boy with the crooked glasses wore his new shoes with pride. I helped him write a thank you letter to send to his provider. Along with his note, I attached a note from me that said, "I wish you could have seen his face it was a blessing for me to see. Thank you."
If you ever have the opportunity to help a child who is less fortunate than you...do it!
The cost is little, but the smile is PRICELESS.
